“what truly makes Giulia.’s music special is the conviction she embeds in her music” Mitch Mosk, Atwood Magazine
NEW YORK/TORONTO (April 5, 2021) – Infusing jazz-influenced arrangements, unusual rhythmic phrasings, and understated spoken word into her dreamy indie-folk melodies, Giulia. announces the release of her genre-bending EP, Night Before on June 25th. On her upcoming EP, Giulia. paints vivid images of ups and downs, conflicts and resolutions, and deeper meanings underlying the music’s soft dream-like quality. Her vocals form a focal point, swiveling, swaying, and sliding into an explorative journey of city streets, hallowed hallways, and bedrooms closed to the world.
Giulia. explores youth-related issues and the beauties and challenges of discovering who you are as a teenager/young adult. She observes people as characters in a story, navigating the ins and outs of what makes these moments feel so free and yet lonely. The 22-year-old says, “When I write about other people or scenarios that haven’t happened to me, there’s always a naivete about it and a curious approach to the music because there’s a lot I still don’t know, and I like asking questions in my songs.”
Powerhouse women musicians – an influence throughout her life – attribute to the genre-bending nature of her songs. Jazz queens including Nina Simone, Etta James, and Ella Fitzgerald soundtracked her life from a young age and can be heard in inflections of smoke-tinged vocals. The impact of Adrienne Lenker threads through the overall indie-folk vibe of the EP, especially within the tracks “Lucky Ones,” “Moon, Please,” and “Dreamy Girl.” A Janelle Monae infused funk and R&B style playfully tease on “Baby Dyke” and blend with lyrical rhythms and sounds reminiscent of Amy Winehouse on the single “Tired.” Fiona Apple and Ani DiFranco inspiration tinge the singles “Night Before” and “Lonestar” with a subtle avante-garde and quirkiness.
It’s not just women who played a role as influence and inspiration. Her dad, also a musician, served as a strong connection to music growing up. This connection opened a channel for collaboration, ultimately leading to him producing the songs on the EP. Giulia. and her dad recorded half the songs at their home studio while recording the other half with a full band at a Toronto studio. She says, “There’s an unspoken energy and excitement when we make music together that I wouldn’t trade for the world.” Although there’s a lot of creative freedom in how her dad goes about producing her tracks, experimenting with different instruments and sounds, they work together to find an arrangement they both like.
